TomoTherapy® based dose-escalated radiation therapy for painful bone metastases using the Scan-Plan-QA-Treat workflow

In this webinar, Drs. Muller and Wijesooriya will discuss their experience with same day simulation, planning, and treatment of painful osseous metastases with dose escalated radiation therapy using the TomoTherapy platform. They will also discuss the prospective trials, and the workflow performed at the University of Virginia. The session will be moderated by Dr. Paul Read.

Donald Muller, M.D

Donald Muller is currently the chief resident in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Virginia. He received his medical degree from the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans, Louisiana. He is the primary author for the University of Virginia’s series on the Scan, Plan, QA, and Treat workflow for the same day simulation and treatment of painful osseous metastases using dose-escalated radiation therapy, STAT RAD.

Krishni Wijesooriya, Ph.D.

Dr. Wijesooriya is currently the associate professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Virginia.  She received her Ph.D. in Nuclear Physics.  She joined UVA faculty in 2008.  She has faculty appointments with UVA Radiation Oncology and Physics departments. She initiated many clinical programs at UVA: Total Body Irradiation, Motion Management, deep inspiratory breath hold program for left sided breast treatments.  She has extensive LINAC commissioning experience. She is also the primary physicist involved in national clinical trial protocols at UVA. She is supported by NIH and UVA cancer center. She runs an active research group with UVA undergraduates and graduate students. Her research interests include motion management, log file based QA to improve patient safety, cardiovascular toxicity from radiation treatments, new imaging modalities, and modeling immune suppression following radiation therapy.  She has research experience in GEANT4 simulations, and Varian Amazon cloud based Virtual linac simulations. 

Paul W. Read, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Read is a Professor of Radiation Oncology and Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Virginia School of Medicine where he has been a professor since 2000. He was an early TomoTherapy adopter and has presented 35 TomoTherapy related abstracts at national and international meeting and has published 21 TomoTherapy related papers in peer reviewed journals.  His research has included TomoTherapy dosimetric analyses for head and neck cancer, SBRT (lung, liver, and spine) and breast cancer, adaptive radiation therapy, and machine log file QA. In 2012 he was awarded a $2.5 million dollar CMS grant to improve the care of patients with advanced cancer and developed the STAT RT/STAT RAD same day scan plan QA treat workflows for patients to undergo SBRT of bone in one visit.
