CE Accreditation for Live Attendees Only:
This webinar has applied to CAMPEP for approval of 1 Medical Physics Continuing Education Credit (MPCEC), ASRT for 1 Category A Continuing Education credit, 1 CPE Point for Singapore Society of Radiographers & 1 CPD Credit for Hong Kong Radiographers Board.
This educational webinar highlights a combined 75 years of experience between Dr. Anthony Stein, Hematology Oncology and Dr. Jeffrey Y.C. Wong, Radiation Oncology at City of Hope Cancer Center.
Dr. Wong will begin by sharing his experience pioneering Total Body Irradiation (TBI), Total Marrow Irradiation (TMI) and Total Marrow Lymphoid Irradiation (TMLI) for patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. As one of the world’s leading authorities in TBI, TMI, and TMLI, Dr. Wong and his team were among the first to clinically implement these highly targeted approaches and have treated more than 750 patients using TBI/TMI/TMLI-based conditioning regimens. In this webinar, Dr. Wong will discuss the evolution of TBI and TMLI, address the ongoing “dose rate” debate, and share insights from City of Hope’s extensive clinical experience, including how advanced IMRT-based techniques enable organ sparing, dose escalation, and improved treatment outcomes for patients with hematologic malignancies.
Learning Objectives:
- Differentiate Total Body Irradiation (TBI) and Total Marrow/Lymphoid Irradiation (TMLI), including key clinical indications, treatment approaches, and advantages of each modality.
- Critically Evaluate the “Dose Rate Question”, including historical evidence, radiobiological considerations, and how modern delivery techniques (e.g., IMRT-based TBI/TMLI) influence dose rate interpretation and clinical decision-making.
- Review & Interpret the latest City of Hope phase II data published in The Lancet Journal with Dr. Anthony S. Stein, PI, (Hematology Oncology)demonstrating TMLI-based conditioning for relapsed/refractory leukemia, highlighting targeted marrow dose escalation with organ sparing and its impact on progression-free survival and transplant outcomes.
Presenter: Jeffrey Y.C. Wong, MD
Radiation Oncologist
Professor and Emeritus Chair, Department of Radiation Oncology & Professor, Department of Immunology and Theranostics
City of Hope® Cancer Center – Duarte, CA, USA
Dr. Jeffrey Y.C. Wong is Professor and Emeritus Chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology and Professor in the Department of Immunology and Theranostics at City of Hope National Medical Center and Beckman Research Institute in Duarte, California, USA.
He has more than four decades of experience and has spent over 25 years helping guide City of Hope’s Department of Radiation Oncology through unprecedented growth. Dr. Wong’s team has treated more than 750 patients using TBI, TMI, and TMLI-based conditioning regimens. The program now features state-of-the-art technologies, including image-guided intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT), TomoTherapy®, CT simulation, functional tumor imaging, radioimmunotherapy, and advanced brachytherapy technologies.
Dr. Wong’s team pioneered the development and use of a targeted form of bone marrow irradiation, treating the first patient in 2005 through a collaborative effort between the Department of Radiation Oncology and the Bone Marrow Transplant Program. Since 2002, he has helped lead a team in developing and clinically evaluating a more targeted method of total body irradiation (TBI) using large-field image-guided intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) for patients undergoing hematopoietic cell transplantation for a variety of advanced hematologic malignancies.
His team was the first in the world to treat patients using this approach, known as total marrow irradiation (TMI), which has evolved into total marrow and lymphoid irradiation (TMLI). This technique provides treating oncologists with significantly greater control over dose delivery to target tissues while minimizing radiation exposure to normal organs.
Dr. Wong has been instrumental in the development and implementation of TMLI protocols at City of Hope. A global TMLI database has been established to capture outcomes data from patients receiving IMRT-based TBI, TMI, and TMLI treatments worldwide. His team collaborates with centers across the globe to establish and expand TMLI programs.
